How to play Fermigg
Each Fermigg question takes one positive number. Use your intuition, scratch notes and the built-in calculator. Check the unit, then lock in your estimate.
Fermigg reveals the reference answer, your error multiplier and an example calculation. In a friend match, the reveal waits until both players answer or time runs out.
Your Fermigg solo score averages all three multipliers. Closer to 1× is better. Review every answer, share your result, or compare guesses with a friend.
Divide the larger number by the smaller. In Fermigg, a guess of 1,000 against an answer of 800 scores 1.25×. A guess of 400 scores 2×. Underestimates and overestimates use the same rule.
In Fermigg friend matches, fewer missed answers wins first. If misses are equal, the lower sum of answered multipliers wins. For a complete match, that also means the lower average wins.

Imagine estimating the number of sweets in a jar. This is an illustrative exercise, not an answer from the Fermigg question packs. Instead of inventing a total immediately, picture one layer across the bottom, then estimate how many layers fit inside.
A useful Fermigg starting point is a familiar object or quantity. If a layer holds about 20 sweets and the jar is roughly 15 layers tall, your first estimate is 300 sweets.
Before submitting a Fermigg answer, ask which assumption could be furthest off. Perhaps the rounded jar holds only 12 full layers, or perhaps each layer fits 25 sweets. Those alternatives suggest a rough range from 240 to 375.
Use the Fermigg calculator to compare the alternatives. Choose one positive number supported by your assumptions; a range helps you reason, but the answer field takes a single estimate. Extra decimal places do not make uncertain assumptions more accurate.
Suppose your Fermigg guess is 300 and the reference answer is 240. Dividing 300 by 240 gives 1.25×. A guess of 192 also scores 1.25×, because 240 divided by 192 gives the same ratio. Proportional overestimates and underestimates are treated equally.
Across three Fermigg questions, scores of 1×, 1.5× and 2× average to 1.5×. A perfect round cannot cancel a large miss, so check every answer for an accidental extra zero.
Read the unit beside the Fermigg answer field before calculating. A question about minutes needs a different number from one about hours, even when both describe the same event. Write the conversion down rather than trusting a mental shortcut.
For a Fermigg estimate involving several steps, keep the units attached to your scratch notes. For example, 30 items per minute for two hours means 30 multiplied by 120, not 30 multiplied by two.
Large Fermigg quantities become easier to handle when you split them into a few smaller factors. A daily total might be people multiplied by visits per person. A capacity estimate might be rows multiplied by places per row.
Avoid counting the same factor twice. In Fermigg, multiplying by the number of days after already estimating a yearly total can overwhelm otherwise reasonable reasoning. Before locking in, say what each number represents and check that the final unit matches the question.
After the reveal, compare your assumptions with the explanation, not just the final number. If your Fermigg result is far from 1×, identify whether the problem came from your starting estimate, a conversion, or arithmetic. Each calls for a different adjustment next time.
Try changing one assumption and recalculating in your notes. This makes the review useful even when you now know the answer. Remembering a reference number is different from learning a method you can apply to an unfamiliar question.
Choose solo Fermigg when you want time to think through an unfamiliar scale. There is no countdown, so you can outline a calculation, check the units and revise the number before submitting. Once you lock it in, that answer is final.

In multiplayer Fermigg, submitting before time runs out matters. The winner is decided by fewer missed answers first, then the summed multipliers for answered questions. When both players answer every question, the lower average also wins.
Fermigg rotates through four built-in question packs; it is not an unlimited supply of new puzzles. Repeated questions are opportunities to test a different reasoning method. For a less familiar challenge, pick an available set you have not played before.
Completed solo Fermigg scores are stored in the current browser, so another device will not automatically show the same history. Clearing browser storage can remove those records. Friend matches run on cloud servers, so you do not need to host a game server on your computer.
